Incidentally, I undertook the Commercial Pilot's License test last week
under the same circumstances with the same testing officer and failed that
too!!
Things I do for the benefit of mankind!

Dear All,
I hold both a CIR and PIFR and in a moment of altruism at my last CIR
renewal I agreed to undertake the renewal test with a testing officer from
CASA with our clubs CFI in the back seat in order for him to gain his own
testing approval. Naturally the test was particularly tough and I failed the
renewal. I enquired as to whether this then also precluded me from utilizing
the privilages of my still current PIFR and I was advised by the CASA
testing officer that they had a duty of care to enforce and that my PIFR was
no longer current.

Yes Peter 2 yrs after I completed my PIFR I did a PIFR BFR (if that's what
it's called) and I was right for another 2 years.
Another interesting point is that unlike a CIR renewal where you can be
failed (ask one of our most experienced private pilot IFR flyers, Brian),
with a PIFR renewal it is like a coaching session not a test. In other words
there is no pass/fail. They can recommend you do more work in some areas but
they can't stop you heading off the next day IFR. Well that's the way it has
been explained to me. For those of us - read me - who wilt under pass/fail
exam pressure it can be a help.

Thanks Greg,
It looks a lot easier to keep, especially as there are no formal recency
requirements.
Would you happen to know if the PIFR flight test each two years also fulfils
the requirement for an AFR (formally the BFR)?
Thanks & cheers
Peter

Obviously I have a bias in this argument as a holder of PIFR only, but I
think that the PIFR allows a lot more flexibility both in the ability to
gain FPA's gradually during the training phase if required as well as the
maintaining of currency. It was designed for the Private pilot flying IFR,
which is what we are using it for.... It does away with the pedantic idea
that you are capable of flying an approach after 89 days but not 91. No
argument from me though that currency is always an important consideration.
Keeping a CIR up to scratch regarding recency is fine if you are flying
commercially 4 or 5 days a week often with a co-pilot. How many CIR private
pilots out there whose CIR has lapsed and because of the hassles associated
with renewing it they have not done so?
My thoughts.....

Hi All,
I'm in the final stages of planning for the upcoming PSP and need to make a
final decision regarding which options to take on the program.
I have the opportunity to renew my CIR at the PSP, but as I also have a PIFR
which is perpetual (sorry about all the acronyms) it seems the best course
of action might be to ditch the CIR and just fly under the PIFR.
Any views on this would be appreciated.
Cheers
Peter
