[Oz-mooney] Any sightings of the Catalina??

Geoff (I copy Phil Pusey in because we are talking about the same subject),
After endless stalling an prevarication Racwa finally told me they could not
offer the PIFR (even though I had nearly completed the training). John
Russell was not appointed the CFI-IFR which CASA requires for the course
(even though he is CFI-IFR for the College). He is not in fact a permanent
employee - apparently some bad blood between he and John Douglass. For my
part, although I like the man he is a painful pedant, who is ill-informed,
and makes his own rules up as he has gone along in his life - thus he is
generally too scared to get out of bed.
That said, I finished my NVFR with him, and passed my flight test and went
immediately to Air Australia. Within one flight, young Ryan O'Neill a 30-odd
experienced IFR charter pilot, recommended me for my flight test which is
Monday week...this in contrast to Racwa where they only recommend when they
think you are ready, AA recommend and get you ready, intensively. I'll do
two flights, Monday-Tuesday to brush-up. I thoroughly recommend them.
Air Australia are thoroughly professional, with excellent service, cost not
much more than Racwa per hour, but you save money and more importantly
precious time in the process. I'm very satisfied with them and will proceed
to do the FPA endorsements in the early new year.

Tony,
As you know I would like to do the PIFR. Why did you go with Air Aust. I
am also talking to them.

Mark,
Call me when you are ready to go down the IFR route.
I was initially trained to solo in 1987 by RNAC.
Children, mortgages, and the 1990's resources industry downturn (which took
me overseas for the best part of 12 years) prevented me from continuing
until 2006.
Racwa took me through GFPT again, immediate conversion to the Mooney M20K,
and PPL. Since then, I have gained NVFR and most of my PIFR training. I am
now completing this with Air Australia, and my flight test is on Monday
week.

Yes - as per the thread earlier in the year which was very helpful
information. I will get my cross country command hours up and perhaps do the
nvfr to start .The most complete route skills wise seems to be to do the
IREX/CIR as training but then operate on a PIFR for the more flexible
recency requirements.
Ive been looking into it - we have a lot of good options here in Newcastle,
but also the Royal Aero club in Perth seems to offer a condensed schedule
for those who have prepassed the irex theory exam.

No I would not advise any different. In my experience and opinion, NVFR is
much harder, and potentially more dangerous than straight IFR
training...NVFR is simply IFR except on those occasions when you have a full
moon and/or clear urban light visibility.
It is an excellent training base preceding IFR training, which you
subsequently will find easier.

CSU & Retract #1 then I would think about a NVFR before IREX. Improves your
flying and gives you a basic intro to instrument flying. Others may advise
otherwise I guess.
Cheers

Congratulations Mark. A pass is a pass. ATC don't care what mark you got
when you're up in their airspace
Well done

Good Luck Mark - nice to talk yesterday. I have my PIFR en-route flight test
when I get back to Perth, and so I sympathise 'cos swottings' all I've done
for past few months.
We'll catch-up soon enough, and happy hunting for your "new" Mooney.

I've had a ball actually -mostly because I love the content matter - ive
done a lot of trial exams with good results so it should go ok. Work is
really busy However but Clare and I took a week off at Lord Howe so I could
wade through the texts and study - hey maybe IREX next year! - She might
let me stay another week at Lord Howe..:)
