Michael,
If you need to replace your regulator I can highly recommend that you replace it with one of the solid state regulators as advertised in MAPA Log. I replaced mine with a Zeftronic (just google Zeftronic) years ago and have never had a problem since. Before that I had constant alternator and low voltage issues! The units come with a factory plug so there is nothing to do except plug in the new unit. I run mine at 14.2 volts and I don't think it has moved more than .1 volt in 20 years!! The other thing to check is the quality of the grounding at the battery, and the quality of the main connection of the battery to the engine and main aircraft bus. If there is any corrosion in these cables then you will continue to have issues.
Peter

The M20K Service Manual doesn’t have much on troubleshooting a low voltage indication.
I do have some factory notes though on the procedure and I think the regulator manufacturer also publishes the adjustment procedures. Your LAME should have this info.
As Mike Fitzgerald said, 14.7v is much too high and will cook the battery if it hasn’t already. The ideal charging voltage depends on the battery type.
Ned
It’s been a bane for a while Ned.
The Alternator was rebuilt 18 months ago with new diodes etc and the Regulator fiddled with. It churns out about 14.7 volts in flight.
Some times, if there is too much gear drawing power, esp at night, when I pull the power back it turns the JPI off, which is really strange, or at least recycles it.
I keep meaning to specifically go and go some circuits, day and night, and have the JPI set on the voltmeter reading to see what it drops down to but I bet my bottom dollar it is less than 13.7.
It is having the hundred hourly done now and we have found I have a loose bum…so to speak.
Some skin needs re-riveting near where the tail joins on and there is just a bit too much play in the God Bolt, like about 90 thou, so we will plan an excursion into that area soon. I was quite horrified when the Lame accused me of exceeding VNE…until he started laughing. He thinks it is different metal on metal corrosion causing the rivets to let go. It is a bit scary seeing the skins on the fuse move around when the elevator is moved for and aft.
The IPC and Maintenance manual are out of date and so I will have to order a new one from Mooney. It is all on a flash drive now for USD250. A friend just paid $2500.00 for his A36 maintenance Manual so I am getting off lightly I think. I do have one on DVD which I scored but it is well out of date.
Just another episode in the trials and tribulations of aircraft ownership I guess.
Regards
Michael

Do you have a reading anywhere of the buss voltage when that happens?
The output from the regulator should be 13.7 +/- .25v There is a setup procedure for the regulator.
Another possibility is that one of the diodes in the alternator has gone u/s.
I’ve had all these problems at one time or another.
Ned
Good.
I thought it was the clear to land annunciator!
Happens every time I pull the power back to flare

No IMHO… Ned
Hi Hamish,
Could the flashing hi/low voltage light (common to most Mooneys) be an indication of this problem?
Cheers,
Mike

DCA/ELECT/3C Ignition And Starter Switches - Inspection
Applicability: All Bendix ignition and starter switches P/N 10-126XXX Series, 10-157XXX Series,
10-357XXX Series, also P/N 10-51104 Series, 10-51150 Series, 10-51160 Series,
10-51180 Series, 10-81388 Series.
Requirement: To prevent possible switch short circuiting and engine failure due to internal fouling
with black powder and brass particles, accomplish the following:-
Remove the cover and inspect for freedom from fouling and wear of contacts. Any
switches found fouled or having excessive wear must be removed from service
before further flight. Excessive contact wear has occurred when the brass base
metal is starting to show a flat surface on the moving contact dimples or the edges of
fixed contacts are worn down appreciably.
Switches which do not satisfy the above inspection must be removed and overhauled
per the manufacturers instructions before further flight.
Compliance: At intervals not exceeding 500 hours TIS.
Effective Date: DCA/ELECT/3B - 27 September
DCA/ELECT/3C - 6 August 1993
