[Oz-mooney] GPS Augmentation - WAAS, MSAS or similar

G'day Folks,

I know that most of you are still cavorting around WA (lucky buggers) while
the rest of us work, however given some of the recent threads regarding GPS
and legacy radio navigation aids the following extract from a CASA email is
interesting. The ASA direction is not encouraging either.

>From the CASA email:

Project closed - AS 03/01 - Development and implementation of Ground-based
Regional Augmentation Systems (GRAS) in Australia.

Airservices Australia have advised that the GRAS development program has
been terminated but the GBAS component of the GNSS program will continue. It
is not Airservices' intention to commit to any other alternative wide area
augmentation system. Any decision to proceed down this path will be
dependant on the Government's position and views of the aviation industry.

Full details of the archived project can be found at:
<http://casa.gov.au/newrules/airspace/AS0301.asp>
casa.gov.au/newrules/airspace/AS0301.asp

The GRAS (Ground Regional Augmentation Service) project which would not have
been as good as an SBAS but would have provided regional coverage for an
area such as the Sydney basin or the Brisbane/Sunshine Coast/Gold Coast
areas has been cancelled. My hope had been that an SBAS project might have
followed but there is no intention of that at this stage.

ASTRA seems to have stalled and that website seems dead (Ian Mallett you can
PM me and I'll pass them on if you have a comment).

We will have to wait for the Aviation white paper to see if that offers any
promise. Pity the Benalla inquest was not held before the green paper
submissions were due. There has been some interesting evidence given in
those proceedings.

I will be keeping those ADF and VOR endorsements very current for a good
while yet!

Regards,
