Cessnock an alternate! - it was just as windy up here and yesterday not much better - wrestled the plane to the ground in a big crosswind there yesterday, and got hit with a 30 foot updraft just before wheels down . The nice thing about cessnock is there is pretty good accomodation just over the road if you have to stay over night!

Hi Tim,
Thanks mate for organising a great event! It never ceases to amaze me at the number of good contacts you've got for great places to visit (and eat at!).
Yes - yesterday had the potential to be challenging, particularly re storms and strong winds. There's something ominous when you hear numerous SPECI weather reports and amended TAFs concerning places nearby or that you've just overflown!
We had a nice trip YAYE to Broken Hill at A095 with a 22 KT tailwind component. Could have gone higher but wanted to conserve the O2 for closer to Sydney in case it was needed. LOP worked well and gave around 11 GPH, so we landed at YBHI with over 43 gallons remaining after a 3.7 hour trip.
A phone call to the met office did little to allay my fears of storm activity closer to Sydney as the briefer said he had just issued numerous amended TAFs for possible alternates near my route like Parkes Wagga, Cowra Orange and Griffith which were originally free from the 30PROB TS. Also, Bankstown was experiencing winds 50 deg off the runway gusting to 29Kts which was going to be interesting. I resolved Cessnock in the Hunter was the alternate if storms were an issue and Hoxton Park would do if I was going to have crosswind problems at BK. He did make the comment that the expected convective activity was not as severe as originally thought due to lack of moisture in the atmosphere. In the event there was NO hint of any storm activity either visually or on the WX950 Stormscope, just a few wanna be's reaching about 20K which were easy to avoid. This really backs up my conviction that much of the dire forecast weather conditions we get are really only to protect the BOM from legal liability. If only we could tell which was for real.
The wind picked up just as we were leaving Broken Hill, and resulted in an interesting takeoff. We received a SPECI for Broken Hill on climb-out - a bit late!
As it turned out, we needed the O2 for the leg to BK. There was a lot of blowing dust below A010 and BKN CU. FL 110 was not available due to the low QNH, so we climbed to FL130. This was right in the middle of some building CU so I opted for FL150. It was hot and the climb for the last 1000ft was at about 200fpm. Made me think of the extra versatility of the Acclaim.
The engine refused to run smoothly LOP at FL150, so I elected to run at +20deg ROP which gave 13.5 GPH for 175 KTAS. I'm taking LOP fairly cautiosly, but I read recently that TCM approves of operating at peak EGT at power settings of 65% or below.
Despite information Hotel at Bankstown still advertising winds gusting to 29 Kts, a request for a wind check on final advised: "oh, the crosswind is now 8 knots!" More protecting of backsides!
Cheers
Peter

Again, many thanks to Tim for organising what was a great flyin. I think that we should all encourage Peter to bring his English friend to future flyins.
We have just returned to Adelaide - average speed between Kalgoorlie and Adelaide about 200 knots!. We were intending to fly direct Coral Bay to Forrest but was given a SPECI for Forrest while in flight of winds at Forrest of 40G55 so we diverted to Kalgoorlie until the Forrest winds dropped to a more reasonable 25G35. There are new managers at Forrest but they are also very nice people and it is a great place to overnight. Might be a good spot for some of the East Coasters to stop on the way to or from the WA flyin in March.
Tony,
Regarding the WA flyin, I wonder whether it might be worth trying to put a booking on the RACWA mooneys for those from those in the deep north that might prefer to take a jet to Perth and hire a mooney for the flyin. Might also be worth putting a note in the US MAPA to alert any US mooney drivers that there is an opportunity to join the flyin in a hired Mooney. If you agree and some RACWA aircraft are available, then I'm happy to put it in the MAPA newsletter.
Best regards to all
John & Rosemary

G'day T i m,
Glad you got home safely. Thanks for organising that fantastic fly-in - you did a marvellous job and deserve unlimited praise for your efforts!
Thanks, too, to the great group of Mooniacs who attended the fly-in. Lorraine and I enjoyed your company enormously.
The highlight? A tough one, but I'd have to say it was listening to Peter on the banks of the Pentecost. Pure magic. Thanks for the CD, Peter.
Look forward to seeing you in Perth next February. The date will be announced soon and I'll be in touch with our Fly-in Co-coordinator to ensure I don't stuff it up.
Cheers,
Tony

Well I think everything went off without a hitch and all had a Great Time !!
Mt Isa to Gold Coast today was not a day I would like to have again. Dodging Thunderstorm CB's all over Queensland. Easy Flight > Isa - Longreach - Gold Coast. Turned into a "Challenging" flight
Isa - Winton - Mackay - Rocky - Maroochy - Gold Coast.
Glad to be home , exhausted, off to bed
Goodnight all
T i m.
